Gina on Kipling “Make Happy” Campaign and “Deepwater Horizon”

Anyone who watches “Jane the Virgin” will know Gina Rodriguez seems like the kind of gal you want to be BFFs with. And, after chatting with the Chicago-native IRL, we can confirm she’s just as lovely as you would hope she would be.

Between winning Best Actress at this year’s Golden Globes, landing a campaign with handbag brand Kipling, and nabbing a role in the hotly-anticipated “Deepwater Horizon” flick, 2015 is shaping up to be Rodriquez’s year. We caught up with the star to talk about her new gig visiting college campuses as part of Kipling’s pay-it-forward-like “Make Happy” campaign. As the handbag brand’s current face, Rodriguez told us all about the campaign, her upcoming projects, and even willingly obliged to play a round of “would you rather,” with us–see, told you she’s brilliant.

StyleCaster: Tell us about your involvement with the Kipling Make Me Happy campaign.
Gina Rodriguez: I’m just so excited to have the chance to go and give encouragement, feed ambition, and hand over these awesome products to people going after their dreams.

I read that book, The Five Love Languages and after reading it I realized that the way I receive love is through quality time, and the way I give love is through giving . . . So the fact that Kipling was doing this on their own and they asked me to be a part of it, it really was just a perfect partnership.

Kipling is your first big fashion ad campaign. Did anything surprise you about the process of shooting it? What was that like?
It’s actually not a fashion campaign—I aligned and partnered with this specific movement. A lot of people have been supportive by giving me these high props about it being a fashion campaign, but it’s definitely a movement.

As for the photo shoot, it was awesome and wicked fun. I had my glam squad with me and they made me feel so beautiful and amazing every step of the way. I’m not a model, but I definitely felt like one that day, and I definitely felt very comfortable. It was an amazing day, and an amazing photo shoot.

What else are you working on at the moment?
I’m headed to New Orleans soon to film a new movie called “Deepwater Horizon.” The cast is absolutely amazing, I mean Kate Hudson, Kurt Russell. The director is Peter Berg and I’m a huge fan of his. I’ve been a fan of his since he was acting. As much as I love that I’ll be working with all the actors [in the film], he is something else.

Gina Is Doing Something Really Sweet With Her Golden Globe Gown

Fashion can be intimidating for some, but for Gina Rodriguez it was downright scary. The Jane The Virgin star sat down with us last week to talk overcoming her sartorial fears and finding her place in the world of celebrity style at an event for her Make Happy partnership with Kipling, an initiative encouraging others to pay it forward with acts of kindness.

Glamour: How would you describe your style? Has it changed since Jane the Virgin took off?
Gina Rodriguez: I’m really learning about my fashion because I grew up as a tomboy. Big-time. [I grew up] with a mother who didn’t really wear makeup and didn’t really put an emphasis on wearing labels or anything like that. [She’d say that] if you feel beautiful inside, then it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing or what makeup you have on, because your beauty is going to shine through. If you asked anybody who knew me in college, they’d be like, ‘yeah, she doesn’t care, she’ll throw on a T-shirt and keep it moving’. So now I do like my dresses, but I love my leather jacket and boots.

Glamour: So we’re guessing that you and Jane probably wouldn’t really share a closet…
G.R.: The one thing I do love about Jane’s style is that she wears those beautiful A-line dresses that are super complementary. She’s very feminine. I’m probably not as feminine—or as naturally as feminine—as she is.

Glamour: Has turning 30 changed your perspective on style?
G.R.: I’m becoming more adventurous. I’m becoming more comfortable in my skin and what flatters my body type and what accentuates certain parts of my body. [Turning 30] has kind of has allowed me to accept my natural self even more.
